The first Taita School was built about 1865, near the site of the Taita Intermediate School. This school burnt down in 1897 and was rebuilt the following year.
In 1946 the government approved two new schools, known as Taita No.1 and Taita No.2. These became Taita Central and Pomare. The existing school was renamed Taita South.
In 1953 a site was acquired in Avalon for a new school to replace Taita South. The new school became Avalon Primary. The Taita South School became Taita Intermediate School in 1956.
The first Roman Catholic School opened in 1950.
