Formed in 1963 as a territorial unit from a regular force squadron. The unit was initially split between Linton and Petone. In 1964 the whole unit was located at barracks in Pattie Street.
In 1975 the unit was renamed the 65th Field Squadron and in 1988 the 6th Engineer Services Squadron. They are part of the Royal New Zealand Engineers.
Their role in peace time is to provide civil assistance and in war to assist with maintaining the mobility of the armed forces and to obstruct the movement of the enemy.
